Christmas countdown!

Updated: Feb 5, 2020

My first three months in Luxembourg are almost at an end, and there is a very festive atmosphere at work and in town. As I’ve said before, I haven’t given you as many Luxembourg updates as I would have liked, but I have come up with an original and Christmassy solution…

In the countdown to Christmas I will be posting my top ten things to see and do in Luxembourg, according to first three months in the country, and posting my number one Luxembourg tip on Christmas eve – a festive countdown and a good way to fill you all in on what I have been doing since October! So, let’s gloss over certain recent, Luxembourg-related scandals and celebrate the best places and events the country has to offer. Maybe it will even inspire you to visit Luxembourg at some point 🙂

So, starting off the countdown is Number 10 – Diekirch

Diekirch is a town north of Luxembourg city, and home to the brewery that produces Diekirch beer. When my family visited in November, we stopped off in the town on the way back from Vianden. It’s a lovely little town, located in the beautiful Luxembourg countryside beside a river, but, if I’m honest, the main reason it made its way onto this list is this statue in the town square:

Yes, it’s a donkey excreting some coins, with a bit of a smug look on its face. The town’s mascot is a donkey; there is a donkey fountain, a donkey weathervane, shops selling donkey postcards and toys. Definitely a unique town, and something a bit different to start my countdown!

So if you’re interested in finding out the best things to do in Luxembourg, check back in the run up to Christmas! I hope that you’re all having a brilliant advent and see you soon!
